Bruce Springsteen’s first wife Julianne Phillips filed for divorce from the rocker on August 30, 1988. The pair had been privately separated since the spring of that year, and Bruce had already commenced a relationship with his current wife, Patti Scialfa. Springsteen and Phillips had met through a mutual friend, Barry Bell, earlier in 1985. At the time, Bruce was touring heavily worldwide and knew it would be a struggle to maintain his relationship. In writer Dave Marsh’s biography “Two Hearts,” Bruce recalls the feeling, saying:“[I remember] lying in bed thinking about getting married and knowing that whoever’s sittin’ in that seat, it’s not going to be the easiest place to sit in the whole world.”Their divorce was finalized by March of 1989.
