1986 - Steve Winwood Hits #1 With ‘Higher Love’

Steve Winwood reached the top of the Billboard 100 singles chart with "Higher Love" on August 30, 1986.

The singer had catapulted to fame as a teenager as part of the 1960s band the Spencer Davis Group and established himself as a legendary vocalist in such groups as Blind Faith and Traffic. He had some success as a solo artist, starting with his self-titled 1977 effort, before 1986's "Back In The High Life" became a runaway success.

The album included its title track, as well as "Higher Love," which became his first solo number one single.

Winwood would build on the momentum with 1988's "Roll With It," which became a number one album. The title track would also become a chart-topper in its own right, the singer's only other number one single.

"Higher Lover" took over number one from Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach." It held on for one week before being replaced by Bananarama's "Venus."
