KC and the Sunshine Band hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Get Down Tonight” on August 30, 1975. The track was released as part of their self-titled album and included the B-side “You Don’t Know.”When the track hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "Fallin' in Love" by Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds. KC and company held on in the top spot until Glenn Campbell hit number one later that summer with "Rhinestone Cowboy.”The track was co-written by Harry Casey and band member Richard Finch, who recalls its inspiration in an interview with songfacts.com, saying:“He wrote that song about his dog. That record was really hot back then. And I was like, 'Okay, this guy has a great idea.' He's talking about 'get down.' But I didn't find out until later on he was talking about his dog. And I was like, 'Well, that's really square.' How hip is that?"
