Three Dog Night topped the charts on September 16, 1972, with their version of David I. Arkin and Earl Robinson’s “Black and White.” The group decided to record the song after hearing a version recorded by the group Greyhound in 1971. The song was originally inspired by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Brown v. Board of Education case, and its original first verse referred explicitly to the Supreme Court. Among Three Dog Night fans, the song was particularly notable because it was one of the few hits for the group that featured Danny Hutton on vocals.
