Rihanna Reaches Number One With 'S&M' Two Years Ago

1966 - Richard Farina Dies
1966 - Richard Farina Dies

Folk singer and writer Richard Farina was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 29 in Carmel, California on April 30, 1966. Farina had been at a party celebrating the 21st birthday of his wife Mimi when his friend Willie Hinds offered him a ride through the Carmel Valley on his motorcycle.

Hinds lost control of the bike while passing through an “S” curve, flipping off the road and passing through a barbed wire fence. The bike had reportedly been traveling at 90 mph, though the posted speed limit for that section of road was 30 mph.

Hinds survived the crash and his motorcycle license was suspended immediately by the California DMV. An investigation showed that neither Hinds nor Farina were intoxicated at the time of the crash, though Farina’s blood did have an elevated alcohol level.
