Republicans Staunch In Opposition to Democrats Bill

Pelosi’s prediction was swiftly confirmed by Congressional Republicans following the summit with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, rejecting out of hand the notion of moving forward from the basis of the existing Democratic legislation. They called instead for an incremental approach to advance smaller measures that both sides could agree on rather than the massive comprehensive approach favored by Democrats.

“We don’t think a 2,700 page bill, half a trillion dollars out of Medicare, raises taxes … drives insurance premiums up, is a good idea,” McConnell said. “What we think we ought to do is start over and go step by step and target the areas of possible agreement that we discussed in the meeting today.”

He added, “We’re happy to continue to discuss the areas of agreement but I do not believe that there will be any Republican support for this 2,700 page bill that the American people are so overwhelmingly opposed to.”
