The Supremes began recording their fourth consecutive chart topping song “Stop! In the Name of Love” in studio A at Motown’s Hitsville Records studio on January 5, 1965. The track was penned by the Motown hit making trio of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland Junior and released on February 8.

When “Stop! In the Name of Love” hit the airwaves, the Supremes had scored three consecutive number one hits. The track hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 21, 1965, making the Supremes the first group ever to score four in a row.

Lamont Dozier recalled writing the track’s title, telling Billboard: “I was arguing with my girlfriend. I said ‘Stop in the name of love.’ And we both stopped arguing and started laughing. I said, ‘What did I say?’ and she said ‘Something about stop in the name of love.’”
