Belinda Carlisle hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Heaven is a Place on Earth” on December 5, 1987. The track was included on Carlisle’s second studio release, “Heaven On Earth,” which also featured the top ten hits “I Get Weak” and “Circle in the Sand.”When “Heaven is a Place on Earth” hit number one, it claimed the top spot from "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. The track stayed at number one for one week before George Michael’s “Faith” grabbed the top spot.Carlisle had actually completely recorded an earlier version of the track when producer Rick Nowles and his writing partner developed the final version of the song. While speaking with Billboard, Nowles said he was nervous about telling her she’d have to re-record the track. After hearing the new version, however, she agreed happily.
