The compact Austin Allegro was launched by British Leyland in 1973 to replace the archaic Austin 1100, but was strongly criticized for its poor quality and odd styling.

The car’s mechanical problems included a front axle that was prone to collapse, while it’s quartic steering wheel was rectangular with rounded sides.

It has been termed as a British disaster. Thankfully, the car was never exported to the U.S.
