Famed 1970s punk outfit the Slits made their live debut on March 11, 1977. The all-female quartet connected the previous year and first hit the stage opening for the Clash on their White Riot tour. The original members of the band included Ari Up, Kate Korus, and Suzy Gutsy, who had all originally played in the Castrators. They teamed up with drummer Palmolive who had previously played with Sid Vicious in a group called the Flowers of Romance. The Slits quickly gained recognition for their hard-edged sound and became infamous for their choice of band name. In Gillian G. Gaar’s book “She’s A Rebel,” mid-70s band member Viv Albertine explained that “no one liked it, it was offensive to everybody.”With new members Albertine and Tessa Pollitt, the Slits released their debut album “Cut” in 1979 on Island Records. They once again found controversy for their album cover, on which they all appeared topless and covered in mud.
