1990 - Curtis Mayfield Paralyzed

Waiting for a gig on August 13, 1990, soul legend Curtis Mayfield, best known for writing the soundtrack to the movie "Super Fly," suffered a terrible accident. Stage lighting fell on him and he was paralyzed from the neck down.

Unable to play an instrument, Mayfield still went on to put out another album - 1997's "New World Order," which he recorded by singing on his back. He died in 1999 at the age of 57.
