Glen Campbell got his first U.S. number one single on September 3, 1975 with “Rhinestone Cowboy,” a song that had flopped for both Larry Weiss and Neil Diamond only a year before. Campbell’s version connected with audiences, however, reaching number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Country Singles charts. “Rhinestone Cowboy” would spend two weeks atop the 100 and three nonconsecutive weeks at the top of the country chart. It would become the first song since Jimmy Dean’s “Big Bad John” in 1961 to top both the pop and country charts at the same time.
