Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reconnected on stage after more than a decade apart for a free reunion show in New York City’s Central Park on September 19, 1981. The pair had split in 1970 to pursue solo careers, and the show attracted around 500,000 attendees. The event was organized by Paul Simon and included the duo’s best love tracks. The set list included “Mrs. Robinson,” “America,” “The Sounds of Silence” and “Scarborough Fair.” Simon also offered up several of his solo hits including “Me and Julio Down by the School Yard” and “Late in the Evening.”The concert was recorded for a live album that rose to number six on the Billboard 200 chart and also taped for a concert documentary. The pair also inked an unprecedented $3 million dollar deal with HBO, who agreed to air the concert on television the following year.
