1967 – Rolling Stone Goes On Sale
1967 – Rolling Stone Goes On Sale

The first issue of Rolling Stone Magazine went on sale on November 9, 1967. The magazine was founded by Jann Wenner, who had been the protégé of famed jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason. Wenner started the magazine with $7,500 he borrowed from his friends and family members.

The cover for the first edition of Rolling Stone, which was also labeled “page 1” at the time, included a photo of folk star Donovan. The adjoining interview was titled “Donovan: An Incredible Rolling Stone Interview with this Manchild of Magic.”

The interview was actually carried out by journalist John Carpenter in 1967 before the founding of Rolling Stone and was acquired for the magazine by Gleason on Wenner’s behalf. John Lennon was also featured in the first edition.
