Rihanna Reaches Number One With 'S&M' Two Years Ago

1977 - The Steve Miller Band, ‘Jet Airliner’ Released
1977 - The Steve Miller Band, ‘Jet Airliner’ Released

The Steve Miller Band released their classic single “Jet Airliner” on April 30, 1977. The track was released as part of the album “Book of Dreams” and followed Miller’s 1976 smash “Fly Like an Eagle.”

The track was penned by Paul Pena and was recorded for his album “New Train” in 1973. Pena was in deep contract disputes with his label, however, so his own version wasn’t officially released until 2000. Miller initially heard the track through his pianist Ben Sidran, who had worked on the track with Pena.

Pena’s career never lifted off despite the success of “Jet Airliner,” and according to songfacts.com, royalties from the track were his only income for several years. Miller’s original release also featured the B-side “Babes in the Woods.”
