1977 - Glen Campbell Hits #1 With 'Southern Nights'
1977 - Glen Campbell Hits #1 With 'Southern Nights'

Glen Campbell hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his cover of Alan Toussaint’s track “Southern Nights” on April 30, 1977. The song served as the title track to Campbell’s 32nd album and was released with the B-side "William Tell Overture.”

When “Southern Nights” hit number one on the chart, it grabbed the top spot from "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Thelma Houston. The track was eventually succeeded by one of the biggest hits of the 1970s – "Hotel California" by the Eagles.

“Southern Nights” would serve as Campbell’s last entry in the top ten on the Hot 100 chart. It was among his last five chart entries, three of which came with Capitol Records and the last with Mirage.
