Patti Smith played the final show at famed New York club CBGB's on October 15, 2006. The venue - the name stands for Country, Bluegrass and Blues - opened in 1973 at 315 Bowery at Bleecker Street in Manhattan. It helped launch the career of a host of punk and new wave acts in the 1970s and 80s. At the close-out show, Smith told Rolling Stone that her goal was not to wallow in nostalgia, saying "I just wanted to do a night like any other night." She told the crowd during the performance, "This is not a f**king temple - it is what it is." Along with Smith, who first played the club in 1975, the Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie's Debby Harry all helped build their careers with appearances at CBGB's. The Police gave their first U.S. performances at the venue in 1978.
