Jay-Z Reaches Number One With 'Kingdom Come' Eight Years Ago

1960 - Dave Dudley Hit By Car
1960 - Dave Dudley Hit By Car

Country legend Dave Dudley was engaged a near fatal car accident on December 3, 1960. Though injured in the wreck and requiring time off to recuperate, Dudley was awarded a $14,000 insurance settlement due to the wreck, part of which he put towards the recording of his hit single “Six Days on the Road.”

The track hit number two on the Billboard Country Songs chart and helped establish Dudley as the defacto voice of the working man in country music. Country historian Bill Malone went further to suggest that this track helped link country music with the blue collar lifestyle:

"The trucking songs coincided with country music's growing identification as working man's music in the 1960s," he says adding: "Dudley strikingly captures the sense of boredom, danger and swaggering masculinity that often accompanies long-distance truck driving. His macho interpretation, with its rock-and-roll overtones, is perfect for the song."
