Lionel Richie hit the top of the Billboard 200 chart with his second solo studio release “Can’t Slow Down” on December 3, 1983. The album followed his self-titled 1982 debut and featured the singles “All Night Long (All Night)” and “Hello.”

When the album hit number one, it claimed the top spot on the chart from “Metal Health” by Quiet Riot. Lionel held on for twenty days at number one before “Thriller” by Michael Jackson grabbed the top spot.

Speaking with CNN, Lionel noted that it took nearly two months to finish his hit “All Night Long (All Night)” saying:

"I just couldn't find the ending - I couldn't find all night long to save my life. I had everything, the verses, the middle part, all the stuff. I just did not have all night long. It took me forever to find it. And finally one night, the heavens opened up and came through."
