1973 - Bob Wills Holds Final Recording Session
1973 - Bob Wills Holds Final Recording Session

Bob Wills held the final recording session of his career on December 3, 1973. The recording session was held for Wills final new studio album “For the Last Time,” which reunited all of the living members of his historic band the Texas Playboys.

Two days were booked for the album, December 3 and 4, 1973 and Wills would miss the second day after suffering a stroke. Merle Haggard also begged Wills to be part of the session and recorded a moving tribute on the track “Texas Playboy Theme.” AllMusic gives the album high praise writing:

“In all, this is far from the lame tribute record we see so frequently these days; this is a deeply moving and inspiringly executed presentation of Bob Wills as not only a bandleader, but as an innovator and mentor. In other words, it is the only fitting tribute possible, with the man still very much alive sitting among his bandmates for the very last time.”
