The Guess Who recorded their classic track “American Woman” on August 13, 1969. It had initially developed out of an improvised jam during a live performance and became the title track for their seventh studio album, which hit stores in 1970. While speaking with Words And Music magazine, guitarist Randy Bachman recalls how the band came up with the song on the spot nearly by mistake:"We were playing in a curling rink in Kitchener, Ontario (Canada), and I broke a string. I was up there alone, tuning up my E and B strings on an old Les Paul. I started playing that riff and in the audience, heads started turning. The band got up, and I said, 'Keep playing this, I don't want to forget it.' When Burton had run out of solos, I yelled out, 'Sing something!' So out of the blue Burton just screamed, 'American Woman, stay away from me!'” he recalls. The track hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart on May 9, 1970 unseating the "ABC" by The Jackson 5. They held on at number one for three weeks with the track before turning the top spot over to "Everything is Beautiful" by Ray Stevens.
