Despite being known as an authoritarian country and having a reputation of curbing fundamental human rights, China surprisingly emerged on top of the list as the most welcoming nation for refugees, with an overall index score of 85. Just less than half of the people surveyed in the world’s most populous nation, or 46 percent, said they would welcome refugees in their own home. 94 percent of the respondents were prepared to accept refugees in their country. 86 percent of Chinese said they want their government to do more to help refugees.
